Family fun by the harbour

When the autumn school holidays arrive, Darling Harbour transforms into one of Sydney’s most family-friendly precincts. With parks, waterfront walks, playgrounds and attractions all within easy reach, it’s a place where children can burn energy, discover something new and enjoy the freedom of the school break.

Running from Saturday 4 April to Sunday 19 April 2026, the autumn school holidays bring a range of activities and experiences across the Darling Harbour precinct. From Easter celebrations and interactive events to quiet moments exploring gardens and waterfront spaces, it’s a time when the area comes alive with families.

Staying nearby at Hotel Woolstore 1888 places you just a short stroll from the action, making it easy to dip in and out of the festivities while enjoying a relaxed base in Pyrmont.

Easter celebrations and active fun

The school holidays begin with a burst of energy on Easter Saturday, when Darling Harbour hosts the School (Holiday) Disco. This lively afternoon celebration invites families to dance, play and join in activities ranging from K-Pop dance classes to friendly parents’ dance-offs.

There’s also a tumble zone packed with classic playground games like hula hoops and elastics, plus a special visit from the Easter Bunny. It’s a joyful way to kick off the holidays and set the tone for two weeks of family-friendly fun around the harbour.

Gardens, playgrounds and outdoor adventures

Beyond the special events, Darling Harbour offers plenty of opportunities for relaxed exploration. During the school holidays, kids can enter the Chinese Garden of Friendship for free, turning a visit into an adventure through winding paths, tranquil lakes and traditional pavilions.

Children can follow The Emperor’s Quest, a self-guided activity searching for the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac hidden throughout the garden. Daily fish feeding at 11:30am adds another memorable moment for younger visitors.

The surrounding precinct also features playgrounds, open spaces and waterfront paths, perfect for letting the kids roam while parents enjoy the harbour views.

A timeless carousel ride

One of the most charming additions to Darling Harbour is the beautifully restored Darling Harbour Carousel, a vintage attraction that brings a sense of nostalgia to the waterfront.

Originally built more than a century ago and carefully restored over eight years, the hand-carved wooden horses now spin once again against the backdrop of the harbour skyline. Whether it’s a first carousel ride for younger children or a nostalgic moment for parents, it’s a simple pleasure that always brings smiles.

The carousel operates daily with no bookings required, making it an easy activity to add between exploring the precinct’s many attractions.
