Winter School Holidays in Darling Harbour

A family-friendly winter break by the harbour, with skating, free activities and plenty to explore close to Pyrmont

Winter school holidays in Sydney take on a different rhythm around Darling Harbour. From 4 to 19 July 2026, the precinct fills with family-friendly activities, pop-up entertainment and easy ways to keep little ones moving, making it a lively place to spend a winter day by the water.

At Hotel Woolstore 1888, Darling Harbour is close enough to fold naturally into the day. Head out for a few hours, stop for lunch, wander a little longer, then return to Pyrmont for a pause before doing it all again. During school holidays, that kind of ease goes a long way.

Ice skating by the water

One of the big drawcards this winter is the return of the Darling Harbour Ice Rink, running from 27 June to 19 July at Palm Grove Forecourt. Set against the harbourfront, the open-air rink brings a little winter magic to the city, with sessions suited to both confident skaters and first-timers.

For families, penguin skating aids help younger children find their feet, while older kids and grown-ups can turn it into more of an outing. Twinkling lights, winter treats and the novelty of skating beside the harbour all add to the atmosphere.

Free fun throughout the holidays

The school holiday program itself runs from 4 to 19 July, with a mix of free and ticketed activities spread across Darling Harbour. One of the early highlights is the Arctic Activity Zone on 4 and 5 July, bringing winter-themed fun to the precinct with interactive experiences designed to keep kids entertained and moving.

Across the school break, there is plenty more happening too, including scavenger hunts, craft workshops, slime-making, dance parties, kids yoga, Kids Kung Fu Animal Adventures, bungy trampolining and playground fun. It means you can shape the day as you go, joining in where it suits and leaving room for the unexpected. Check out the full line up of activities here.

More to explore around the precinct

Part of what makes Darling Harbour such a useful school holiday destination is that the official program is only one part of the picture. Between the harbourfront, nearby attractions, open public spaces and family-friendly dining, there is plenty to fold around the main activities.

A day here can be busy or loose, depending on your pace. You might start with the ice rink, join an activity in the afternoon, stop for something warm to eat, then let the kids burn off the last of their energy before wandering back toward Pyrmont.

Stay close to it all

Hotel Woolstore 1888 makes it easy to dip in and out of the school holiday atmosphere without feeling locked into it. Spend the day around Darling Harbour, then return to Pyrmont when everyone is ready for a slower hour or two.

Percy is close at hand when it is time to eat, and the walk back from the harbour is easy at the end of the day. For families wanting to make the most of the school break without overcomplicating it, staying nearby helps keep things simple.
